Submit an Invention Disclosure
Submitting an invention disclosure
Submitting a disclosure to ICO is the first step on the path to commercialization and licensing. Only IU faculty, staff and students should complete and submit disclosures to ICO.
There are two ways to submit an invention disclosure:
- Go to IU's ICO Sophia database by Wellspring.
- Log in with your IU CAS credentials after clicking "IU Inventors" in red beneath the login box.
- Choose “New Invention Disclosure” on the right navigation panel.
- Download an invention disclosure form.
If you need to include more inventors/creators, please download the additional inventor-creator form and submit it along with your disclosure: Download an inventor form (for additional inventors)
- Submit by email to invent@iu.edu.
Examples of things you can disclose include:
- inventions,
- software/digital works,
- creative works/copyright
- research tools/biomaterials,
- and any innovation that you believe can create transformative change
Revenue Sharing
Per IU intellectual property policies UA-23 and UA-24, the inventor/creator's share of "Net Revenue" received by IU from IP commercialization is divided equally among all inventors/creators unless all inventors/creators agree in writing to a different revenue sharing distribution. If you wish to specify a different revenue sharing distribution, please complete a revenue distribution form and return it to our office.
What comes next?
The results of the assessment will determine the next steps of the process. If a discovery has commercial potential, the next step in the commercialization process is to secure legal protection for it and seek to license the technology to a company or startup. If deemed acceptable, release using open source or creative commons licenses.
